The World and the City in the 21st Century – March 22

Hosted by Dr. Jan Nijman, Director, Urban Studies Institute, Andrew Young School of Policy Studies; interviewed by Dr. Mary Beth Walker, Dean, Andrew Young School of Policy Studies.

Synopsis: Global and urban research once were positioned at opposite ends of a scalar spectrum but now they are increasingly entwined. Major urban regions form the building blocks of a global economy (and culture) that is ever more integrated. Understanding cities requires an understanding of global processes, and vice versa. In this GPS event, professor Jan Nijman, director of GSU’s new Urban Studies Institute, reflects on his international research experience in Amsterdam, Miami, Mumbai and Hong Kong, and discusses where Atlanta fits in the work at the new Institute.
