The City of Atlanta’s Public Space Studio participated in the global Park(ing) Day event by hosting activities outside of the Atlanta City Studio (235 Mitchell Street SW).
Parking Day is a day where groups across the world reclaim the space in cities that has been given to cars. Community members come together to turn parking spaces into miniature parks, gathering spots, picnic areas, and more. The city’s Public Space Studio participated in the event this year.
USI alum, Carlos Garcia, a planner with the city, shared a few words about the project:
“The Department of City Planning, in collaboration with the Department of Transportation is excited to offer fun, interactive activities for this year’s Park(ing) Day, to highlight ways we can create an Atlanta for All through initiatives such as Vision Zero and our Tactical Urbanism Guide.
As a young planner, I’m excited to participate in this special tradition that encourages us to reimagine and repurpose some of our most common public spaces, typically taken up by cars, and transform them in ways that allow us to express our creativity and explore the many possible ways everyday life could be.”
