Environmental Sustainability
Environmental sustainability draws from fields such as urban ecology, political ecology, and sustainability science in addition to the integration of social-ecological-technological systems. This research uses a systems approach to understand interactions between humans and the environment and to develop solutions to address sustainability challenges, such as the following:
- Enhance and protect urban ecosystems, amenities, natural resources, and biodiversity in a rapidly urbanizing world
- Mitigate and adapt to global environmental change, including climate change
- Integrate strategies for water, land, air, food, and urban management at the local and global levels
- Build equity while avoiding irreparable damage to our planet’s natural systems
- Understand governance, policy, and technologies that support sustainable programs and behaviors
- Envision sustainable, transformative futures and effective strategies to work toward that goal
Much of our research is conducted on environmental sustainability via the Sustainable Futures Lab linked below.
